Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase

Boards of Canada - The Campfire HeadphaseThis Scottish duo's third album is their most shoegazer-y and gorgeous. For the first time, acoustic and electric instruments intrude on their landscape, which brings them closer to the work of artists like Four Tet and M83. But there's an intricacy to their beats and a strange, underwater quality to their samples that's strictly BoC. It's weird woozy music that's lovely and alien. "Dayvan Cowboy,"for instance, is a slow-paced bit of moody psychedelia; the drums don't even kick in until two thirds of the way through. The hypnotic, analog synth-driven "Farewell Fire"sounds like some lost tune by space-kraut pioneers Cluster. This is music you listen to when drugs don't work anymore; it's more reliable and a whole lot cheaper besides. "Oscar See Through Red Eye,"one of the more percussive songs, is perfect for languid late night dancing, but most of the album is sublimely made for the bean bag chairs. --Mike McGonigal

Moog Soundtrack

Thinking about getting the Moog soundtrack for the Moog DVD?

Read this:
Widely dismissed as a passing novelty in its formative years, New York inventor Robert Moog's electronic synthesizer eventually evolved into the most revolutionary instrument of the past century. While the sonic burblings of the original Moog are too often associated with 60's/70's kitsch, musician/documentarian Hans Fjellestad ably frames his film/soundtrack around a more contemporary mix of styles that better showcase the instrument's enduring, nearly boundless potential. Fjellestad's own "Abominatron" intersperses samples of Moog himself discussing the instrument, while Stereolab and Meat Beat Manifesto offer the synth a compelling spotlight within their own band contexts and Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins give it some overdue funk/r&b props on "When Bernie Speaks." The bonus disc of non-film cuts haphazardly documents the instrument's historical contributions to rock/pop forms that range from prog (ELP, Yes) to new wave (Devo, Gary Numan, New Order) and mainstream kitsch (They Might Be Giants cover of the Disney Electrical Parade's "Baroque Hoedown") even as it shortchanges Moogphiles of the classical and soundtrack contributions of Wendy Carlos and the bold, inventive excursions of veteran jazz pianist Dick Hyman. --Jerry McCulley

A perpetual workaholic, Squarepusher (a.k.a. Tom Jenkinson) released three albums in rapid-fire succession in 1997. While his complex compositions stayed admirably fresh over each disc, by the end of the series it was evident that he had exhausted every trick in the abstract drum & bass book. On Music Is Rotted One Note, Squarepusher wisely expands his musical palette by sidestepping the conventions of electronic music. Relying primarily on minimalist jazz patterns and contemplative rhythms, he creates a low-key freeform soundtrack that is accented beautifully by electric guitars and moody bass lines. - Aidin Vaziri

"This is another absolutely masterful work by Tom Jenkins. aka Squarepusher Unlike his newer CD's, or his older CD's, this album has a mix that blends the harder electronica and the highly stylized jazz into one continuous dreamscape of sound and intrigue."

Analog Bubblebath - Aphex Twin

Have been spinning this one all day.

Analog Bubblebath
Original Release Date: 1991

1. Analogue Bubblebath - listen
2. Isopropophlex - listen
3. Entrance To Exit - listen
4. A F X 2 - listen

Whether it's Caustic or Polygon Window, AFX, or just plain Richard James, the man known as Aphex Twin always writes dream-inspired music. Not pleasant, running though a field of flowers dreams, but dark, paranoid, and haunting nightmares. The third installment of Analogue Bubblebath is no exception, and continues in the same demented direction as previous volumes. Describing individual tracks this time around is more difficult than usual, as each track is given a (seemingly) random serial number rather than a traditional title. The only exception is "AFX 6/b," an ambient, electro number that tweets, chirps, and hums with mechanical inspiration. Other tracks range from the sound of stuck machine cogs mixed with phazer fire to scratchy minimal techno to gurgling guttural noises. Frightening but inspired. --Daniel Shumate from Amazon.com

Theremin - An Electronic Odyssey (1995)

cover

Starring: Leon Theremin, Robert Moog

Leon Theremin was the secret link between sci-fi films, the Beach Boys, and Carnegie Hall. His self-named electronic musical instrument--the first of its kind--took the world by storm in the 1920s and '30s. Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey, winner of Sundance's Filmmakers Trophy, explores the inventor's strange life and times, including his mysterious 50-year disappearance beginning in the 1940s. Interviews with theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog, and Theremin's contemporaries, as well as clips from movies such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, featuring the unworldly sounds of his creation, show an eccentric genius working toward success until his sudden vanishing in the Soviet Union. Footage of Theremin at 94 years old, finally rediscovered and rewarded for his achievements, brings a celebratory ending to what could be a grim or at least uncertain story, but instead is a fascinating documentary. --Rob Lightner --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.

New Grammy For Best Electronic Music Album

Some say it's been a long time coming, particularly BPM Magazine who were delighted to celebrate the new category 'Best Electronic Music Album' added to the prestigious Grammy awards. So delighted in fact, that they threw a party at the Avalon nightclub in LA.

Roland, obviously just itching for an excuse to party - we've met some of them and believe me, they can, arranged for a bunch of gear to be made available to the star-studded guest-list.

"Electronic music is finally garnering the respect and recognition it deserves, and we're excited to be a part of that," says Roland Director Product Management and Marketing Doug Hanson. "Roland has played a significant role in the evolution of electronic music during the last 20 years and has advanced the industry with innovative and intuitive technology. It is an exciting time for this genre and we look forward to working with BPM in the future to co-develop events that will generate additional public awareness of this music style."

VIP attendees included some of the most important faces in electronic music including BT, Paul Oakenfold, The Crystal Method, and Junkie XL.

During the evening aspiring DJs, remixers, and top-of-line producers descended upon the Roland display area to check out Roland's new MV-8000 Production Studio, SP-606 Sampling Workstation and the popular MC-909 Sampling Groovebox. - full article
